Ambient Orb & Beacon Technical FAQ

Please read the FAQ describing our technology and philosophy.

Ambient Orb & Beacon Web Developer's Kit

If you own an Orb or Beacon,  have upgraded to a Premium account, and wish to control the colors directly through our website, you need to sign up for our Developer Channel.  This allows you to use our infrastructure to transmit your information directly to your orb.  Customers have used this feature to illuminate key performance indicators such as web traffic, call waiting queues, and inventory levels. Please note, you will need to write your own software to post data automatically to our servers—the Developer Channel simply listens for your command (for example, "flash red") and cannot perform any analysis on its own.

Ambient Orb & Beacon Hardware Developer's Kit

If you own an Orb or Beacon and wish to control it directly from a PC serial port, you need our Hardware Developer's Kit. You may build your own (schematics are available for free on this page), or order one from us.

*While the demo software is Java, communication with the serial port uses custom native code that will only work on a Windows computer.  If you develop a solution for other platforms, please let us know so we can post it here.  For more info, please see:  http://web.media.mit.edu/~benres/simpleserial/)

Build Your Own Orb

If want to build your own orb, or just want to know more about ours, we've provided some information.  Please let us know what you build and we'll post a picture in our upcoming gallery.
